Possible explanation for star-crushing effect in binary neutron star simulations

چکیده
A possible explanation is suggested for the controversial star-crushing effect seen in numerical simulations of inspiralling neutron star binaries by Wilson, Mathews and Marronetti (WMM). An apparently incorrect definition of momentum density in the momentum constraint equation used by WMM gives rise to a post-1-Newtonian error in the approximation scheme. We show by means of an analytic, post1-Newtonian calculation that this error causes an increase of the stars’ central densities which is of the order of several percent when the stars are separated by a few stellar radii, in agreement with what is seen in the simulations.

D ec 1 99 7 Simulations of binary coalescence of a neutron star and a black hole
We present the results of Newtonian hydrodynamic simulations of the coalescence of a binary consisting of a black hole with a neutron star. The calculations show that for a wide range of initial conditions the core of the neutron star survives the initial mass transfer episode. We therefore identify black hole–neutron star binaries as the astrophysical production site of low mass neutron stars ...
متن کاملNeutron star spin-kick velocity correlation effect on binary neutron star coalescence rates and spin-orbit misalignment of the components
We study the effect of the neutron star spin – kick velocity alignment observed in young radio pulsars on the coalescence rate of binary neutron stars. Two scenarios of the neutron star formation are considered: when the kick is always present and when it is small or absent if a neutron star is formed in a binary system due to electroncapture degenerate core collapse. The effect is shown to be ...
متن کاملWolf-Rayet and O Star Runaway Populations from Supernovae
We present numerical simulations of the runaway fractions expected amongst O and WolfRayet star populations resulting from stars ejected from binaries by the supernova of the companion. Observationally the runaway fraction for both types of star is similar, prompting the explanation that close dynamical interactions are the main cause of these high-velocity stars. We show that, provided that th...
متن کاملRevised Relativistic Hydrodynamical Model for Neutron-Star Binaries
We report on numerical results from a revised hydrodynamic simulation of binary neutron-star orbits near merger. We find that the correction recently identified by Flanagan significantly reduces but does not eliminate the neutron-star compression effect. Although results of the revised simulations show that the compression is reduced for a given total orbital angular momentum, the inner most st...
متن کاملBlack hole neutron star coalescence as a source of gamma–ray bursts
We present the results of hydrodynamic (SPH) simulations showing the coalescence of a black hole with a neutron star to be a promising theoretical source of short duration gamma-ray bursts. The favorable features of the process include rapid onset, millisecond variability, a duration much longer than the dynamical timescale, and a range of outcomes sufficient to allow variety in the properties ...
